My journey toward finding meaning and purpose was sparked in my early 20’s by the war in Vietnam. At the age of 28, while walking in a beautiful forest, my consciousness shifted. It was like walking into another dimension. I was not aware of my physical body or surroundings but at the same time mindful of many impressions. The on-going spiritual nature of reality was so clear, as though this awareness had been tucked behind some curtain that had been pulled open. When I walked out of the woods that day my perception of the world and myself had changed. I could never go back to the unconscious level of functioning that had been my life. Within months of that mystical experience I was drawn to leave the life I had been living to find my path and purpose. The journey took me to the Theosophical Society in Illinois where a woman called Peace Pilgrim arrived for a month long visit. She became my beloved mentor and friend until her death 5 years later, guiding me on the journey with her wisdom and example. “Don’t look to me,“ she would say. “Look to your own inner teacher. That’s your guide.” It wasn’t until her passing in 1981 that I truly understood and experienced the depth of her directive.
The journey continues to be profound. In 1986 I was diagnosed with advanced cancer and told I might have only a few months left to live. I began to write a book, Dying Well, as I focused my attention on coming to a place of peace before dying. I hoped it would be a resource for others who might face a similar journey. In the process I experienced a complete healing and a return to radiant health. When the book was published the title had changed to Profound Healing. The story is offered as a resource to therapists and individuals interested in personal growth and healing.
I became a Wellness Counselor and hypnotherapist in 1993, later teaching for 15 years at the Hypnotherapy Training Institute in Corte Madera, near San Francisco.
In more recent years, while living in the little Village of Cambria on the Central Coast of California, I continued to teach part time and counsel by phone. Life took a new turn in 2025 that brought me to Dixon, CA where I reopened my counseling and sessions to in-person as well as phone sessions and consultations.
